In Simon Sinek’s video Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe, he stated that one of most important spaces to focus your attention when it comes to establishing yourself as a leader, etc. and therefore improving your company culture, he stated that “it’s the environment, and if you get the environment right, every single one of us has the capacity to do these remarkable things”.
Sinek is further supported in this idea by Catherine Courage, who also stressed the importance of the environment, where she said that “environment is the foundation of creative thinking.”
With the leader setting the tone for the organisation with their decisions, the foundation of their business and the nature of the environment that they have created, it makes sense that anyone who is a part of this such a space is immediately influenced by this. If you do not feel safe, or comfortable in your working environment, how are you going to flourish? After all, it is much harder for flowers to grow in concrete than it is in soil.
When you nurture a company culture, you have to start with yourself. When you are hoping to inspire these kinds of changes, you must internalise the philosophy and practice what you preach. From there, easing the change into the rest of the organisation is like the encroach of high tide; it is a gradual transition, the change easing the way forward subtly until suddenly there is no escaping getting your feet wet as you leave the sand, and yet, it’s slow and non-threatening, but steady. Consistent.
If you’re intending to dip your toes into the waters of change; consider this your sign to kick off your shoes. There’s never a good time, or a right time, you just have to go for it.
